Erika Shaver-Nelson was born in Alaska, but grew up in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
Erika spent a lot of time in theaters as a child, even sitting in the lighting booth of an Alaskan theater as a baby while mom directed the plays. She first started exploring improv and performance in middle school.
She performed in many plays during high school, and after graduation, attended Antioch College in Ohio. She earned her BA in Performing Arts from Hampshire College in Massachusetts. During her college years, she started working with elders, volunteering for the activities department in an Amherst nursing home, and doing activities work in the memory care section of a Yellow Springs nursing home.
After college, she focused more on her work with elders, doing home care and working as a team leader for caregivers at an assisted living facility in Boulder, Colorado. She also did work providing companionship to and assisting elders with daily needs in their homes, both in Colorado and in California.
In 1998, she moved to San Francisco to attend California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), and earned a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, with a concentration in Drama Therapy. Here she began exploring the connections between theater, performance and healing, and part of her training included doing drama and expressive arts therapy in addition to recreational activities with groups and individuals in a long-term memory care facility.
Her subsequent years of study with performance artist and shaman Frank Moore brought all of these passions and experiences into a connected whole.
After graduate school, she served for over 3 years as Enrichment Director at Claremont House, an independent living/assisted living community in Oakland, CA. She then became Activities Director at Chaparral House, a skilled nursing community in Berkeley, CA, and held this position for 10 years. In addition to developing an innovative and thriving Activities Department at Chaparral House, in 2016 the American Health Care Association awarded her department the Not for Profit Program of the Year Award for its volunteer program.
Erika has completed the CARES Dementia Specialist training, Music & Memory training and recently became a Timeslips Creative Storytelling Certified Facilitator.
After living for many years in Berkeley, California, in 2021 she moved to Idaho with her partners, Corey and Alexi, and their cat, Dreamboat!

Why Music Boosts Brain Activity
"As a caregiver for my husband with Alzheimer's who has always enjoyed creative pursuits, I had been searching for activities that would stimulate that part of his brain. He had been struggling with the loss of his artistic abilities. After meeting with 'Ms. Erika' regularly for the past several months, he has started to appreciate the beauty in colors and shapes from everyday surroundings. Erika always has a new project to help him practice being engaged in the present moment. Which is a lesson we all can benefit from!"
